What and When to Post in Your Housing Authority App

Consistent, useful content helps residents see your app as a trusted source of information. The key is to post regularly without overwhelming your community - or yourselves! Once you have a good content base, start pulling already-created content to the top of your feed to keep the app fresh.

How Often Should You Post?

Aim to publish one to four content items each week. A steady mix of timely updates and helpful resources gives residents a reason to return to the app. compasskb

Consider sharing:

  • Maintenance notices and planned service interruptions
  • Office closures or schedule changes
  • Application, recertification and inspection deadlines
  • Rental, homeownership and housing rehabilitation opportunities
  • Homebuyer education, workshops and housing fairs
  • Community meetings and local events
  • New construction, renovation and infrastructure updates
  • Utility, mortgage or emergency assistance programs
  • Seasonal home maintenance and safety tips
  • Employment opportunities, requests for proposals and community resources

Housing authority residents are often most responsive to information that is timely, local, and personally useful—especially notices that affect their home, appointments, eligibility, finances or access to services.

HUD guidance also emphasizes clear communication and resident involvement as important parts of building strong resident-management relationships. Learn more from HUD.

How Often Should You Send Push Notifications?

As a starting point, send approximately one to three pushes per week, reserving additional notifications for urgent or time-sensitive information. Too many pushes can cause residents to tune them out.

A push is especially helpful for:

  • Emergency alerts
  • Maintenance or utility interruptions
  • Office closures
  • Upcoming deadlines
  • Inspection and appointment reminders
  • Meetings, trainings and community events

Keep the push short, lead with the most important information and connect it to a content item containing the complete details.

Use Recurrences and Pins to Keep Information Visible

Some information remains important throughout the year. Instead of creating the same item repeatedly, use recurring content to bring it back to the top of the feed at the right time. You can also use Pins in the Content Table to Pin content to the top of the feed.

Good recurring-content examples include:

  • Monthly rent reminders
  • Office hours and contact information
  • Maintenance-request instructions
  • Homeownership or rental-program information
  • Seasonal home-care reminders
  • Regular community meetings
  • Frequently used forms and application instructions

Choose a recurrence schedule that matches when residents will need the information. Always review recurring items periodically so dates, links and contact details remain accurate.

Schedule Reminders in Advance

Use scheduled and recurring pushes to plan communications for meetings, events, inspections and deadlines. For an important event, consider this reminder schedule:

  • One week before: Introduce the event and explain why residents should attend.
  • One or two days before: Share a short reminder with the date, time and location.
  • The day of the event: Send a final reminder only when it will be helpful.

For monthly meetings or regularly scheduled programs, create a recurring push schedule so reminders are sent automatically. If a date or location changes, remember to update both the content item and its scheduled pushes.

Keep Every Post Clear and Action-Oriented

Residents should quickly understand:

  1. What is happening?
  2. Who does it affect?
  3. When does it happen or when is the deadline?
  4. What action should they take?
  5. Where can they get help?

Use a clear title, a short opening sentence and an image when it adds useful context. Include a Goodlink phone number, link, location or contact person whenever residents may have questions.

💡Pro Tip: Start with a simple weekly rhythm—one operational update, one community or program announcement, and one helpful resident resource. Consistency is more valuable than posting a large amount of content all at once.
